AI is the science of developing human-like intelligence in computing systems, where machines emulate the human behavior and expertise. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised as the next industrial revolution enriching the way people live and work. India being the fastest growing economy recognizes AI's potential and has strategized its approach to use AI to solve problems related to the second largest population in the world. AI is being and will be addressing national priorities, solving social challenges, increasing economic prosperity and touching every aspect of life and research.

A Hackathon where no hierarchy exists, quest of unknown and zeal of implementation persists, no limitation in imagination - only Innovation is the essence.

In the same line C-DAC and NVIDIA conceptualized and join hands together to conduct, “AI Hackathon 2019 (AIH-2019)” which opens doorways of new opportunities for budding innovators to solve grand challenges by indulging into intense technical discussion and development guided by experts.


The main objective behind the entire exercise is to bring out a working model of their ideas which may have prospects to revolutionize the way human interpret “Science of AI”.

“AI Hackathon 2019 (AIH – 2019)” provides a unique platform to participating teams to work on ideas by applying AI techniques and help those ideas to see the light of the day. Tackling real-world problems involves bringing together experts from industry and academia across disciplines. Each team will be closely mentored, monitored and guided by expert from respective domain of the targeted application. Teams and experts would deliberate, decide and implement some of the most well-established AI optimization techniques using state of the art GPU computing resources.

  • Top academic talents and industry experts to solve India specific AI problem statements
  • Access to latest GPU Clusters at C-DAC

Eligibility Criteria

The hackathon will provide unique opportunity for participants to work on the pre-defined problem statements.

General Criteria

  • Each team can have minimum 3 and maximum of 5 members
  • The team either should belong to an Indian Academic Institute/Indian Research Organization

Problem statement

  • The team should accept to follow the guidelines mentioned as part of the problem statement.


  • In case an expert wants to apply as a mentor, he/she should have hands-on experience with In-depth domain knowledge relevant experience in AI.
  • Willing to spend time dedicatedly towards mentoring teams to bring fruitful outcome
  • Mentors responsibility are put in detail in “Guidelines” section below


For Participants

  • The team should be well versed with AI technology/framework/programming. Collectively the team should have good knowledge of computer programming and their preferred domain
  • Participants are advised to showcase one strong use case rather than showing many half-cooked demos.
  • The data/technology which will be used during hackathon must not be shared externally without the permission of the Hackathon Organizers/ Problem Statement Owners

For Mentors

  • Mentor can make recommendations and give directions to the pre-defined problem statement. They should not be changing the primary problem statement unless advised by organizers
  • Mentors should not ask the mentees to use any proprietary dataset
  • Confidentiality of the solution, data and ideas discussed has to be maintained under all circumstances
  • Mentors are expected to reply quickly for any query raised

Stay & Travel

  • Registration and Participation in AI Hackathon 2019 is free.
  • Please note that selected teams / members have to bear all of their travel related expenses.
  • Participants would be provided free twin-sharing based accommodation; Accommodation would be provided from 25th September to 1st October 2019. Participants would be provided free lunch, snacks

What are the evaluation criteria based on which we will be selected as Top 30 25 Teams?

The teams will be ranked based on the following general criteria

  • Contextual Relevance: Relevant to India and has high impact to Indian scenario
  • Technological Superiority: Use of latest technology and trends, better performance and accuracy.
  • Innovation Quotient: Innovative with high research quotient and potential to become unique solution
  • Viability: The solution is practically feasible in real world scenario considering the cost to solution, ease of integration into existing infrastructure and easy deployment in the field.
  • Team Participation: The team should be able to demonstrate the expertise as given in the application.

Are we expected to have the full solution at the time of submitting the initial application?

No, the team does not need to submit a whole solution or demo. The expectation is that the team submits presentations/ part of the proposed solution. The more details are present in the proposed solution the more chances are for you to be among 30 25 selected teams.

What about the privacy of the data sets?

The data sets will remain as part of the C-DAC GPU cluster and will be deleted post hackathon. All participating organizations and participants will be signing NDA or equivalent document agreeing not to copy the data outside the cluster environment.

Who will be providing us with the data sets?

Problem Statement owners will be responsible for the India specific problem statement and data sets.

Who will be owning the solution provided by the participants?

Who will be the team leader?
